Department of Political Science

The department of Political Science was established with the inception of the college in the year 1964 with a vision to provide quality education through “Value based Politics with human dignity, leadership, equality and justice the objectives of the department”. Prof. Vashant S. Patil was the founder teacher. He was the only member of the department. In the beginning Political Science was offered as a minor subject, Later it was offered as a major subject in the year 1969. Shri V. S. Patil left the department to join Karnataka University Dharwad as Lecturer. His contribution to the field of Political Science is very wide . He has contributed innumerable books on Political Science. One of his book was recommended as the textbook of Political Science by Karnataka University Dharwad .

Prof. V. B. Kamatagi joined the department in the year 1971 and Shri R. M. Shivapujimath joined the department in the year 1973. Further in the year 1985 Shri B. N. Doddamani joined as a Lecturer. Later Shri S. V. Kambi. Shri S. S. Patil, Shri B. A. Kandagal, Shri Ajaykumar P S, joined as temporary faculty. Presently Dr.Ramesh Y Malagi and Dr.Mahadevagouda are looking after the department. Both the faculty members are well qualified involved in imparting education. Students are admitted on the basis of proficiency and previous entry-level examination performance. Irrespective of Socio-economic status, all the interested students are admitted to the Department. During the academic year 2001-02 Kumar Mallikarjun Gajendragada has obtained Gold Medal in Political Science from Karnataka University Dharwad. Over the years the subject has grown in popularity. Presently Political Science is studied with other subjects in the following six combinations.

  1. BA1st SemesterDSC-1 BASIC CONCEPTS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE:
    • Political Science, theoretically and will gain knowledge to explain and analyze politics atlarge.
    • The dynamics of politics.
    • To inculcate the democratic spirit.

    DSC-2 POLITICAL THEORY

    This course aims to introduce certain key aspects of conceptual analysis in political theory and the skills required to engage in debates surrounding the application of the concepts.

    At the end of the course the students shall understand –

    • The nature and relevance of Political Theory.
    • The different concepts like Liberty, Equality, Justice and Rights.
    • To reflect upon some of the important debates in Political Theory.

    HUMAN RIGHTS (OEC)

    This course aims to introduce the students to basic concepts and practices of Human Rights inthe global and local domain. This course also exposes them to certain recent issues confrontingthe Human Rights debates.

    After completing this course students will be able to-

    1. Explain the basic concept of Human Rights and its various formulations.
    2. Have necessary knowledge and skills for analyzing, interpreting, and applying theHuman Rights standards and sensitize them to the issues.
    3. Develop ability to critically analyse Human Rights situations around them.

    BA IInd Semester

    DSC-3WESTERN POLITICAL THOUGHT

    The Syllabus is designed to understand Political Philosophy, traditions thatevolved in Europe from Ancient to the beginning of modern era. To examine the contributions ofthe Greek, Medieval and early Modern thinker’s Philosophical thought.

    At the end of the course the students shall understand –

    • And get an introduction to the Schools of Political Thought and Theory making in theWest.
    • And introduce the richness and variations in the political perceptions of WesternThinkers.
    • And familiarize themselves to the Thought and Theory of Western Philosophy.

    BA IIIrd Semester

    Indian Political Thought

    • This paper attempts to introduce students to the entire gamut of political thinking in India from the beginning to the present. It focuses on key thinkers from ancient to modern times tounderstand their seminal contribution to the evolution of political theorizing in India. Itemphasizes on the distinctive contribution of Indian thinkers to political theorizing and therelative autonomy of Indian political thought.

    International Relations and Organization

    • This paper deals with concepts and dimensions of international relations and The Concept of theories of power and different aspects ofbalance of power are included. The student is expected to study International Politics andIndia’s Foreign Policy from a pro-active and futuristic perspective.Understand the overall political situation in the state and the assess the policies of the government in proper perspective.

    BA Vth Semester

    Public Administration

    • This paper is an introductory course in Public Administration. The essence of Public Administration lies in its effectiveness in translating the governing philosophy into programmes, policies and activities and making it a part of community living.

    Modern Governments (United Kingdom & Switzerland)

    • This paper exposes students to the leading model constitutions of the world. The effort is also to cover leading constitutions of the United Kingdom & Switzerland. These constitutions are to be studied in light of the political processes to gain understanding of the dynamics of actual politics and policy making in these countries.

    Indian Administration

    • The purpose of this course is to provide students with broad understanding of key dimensions of Indian Administration functioning at different levels. The objective of the course is to help students to understand and analyze the administrative reforms introduced recently to make administration people-centric and to what extent that goal has been realized.

    BA VIth Semester

    International Relations

    • This paper deals with concepts and dimensions of international relations and The Concept of theories of power and different aspects of balance of power are included. The student is expected to study International Politics and India’s Foreign Policy from a pro-active and futuristic perspective.

    Political Process and Institutions in India

    • To enable the students to familiarize with the philosophical framework of the political process in India. It simultaneously studies in detail the political structure- both Constitutional and Administrative. It also intends to strengthen the understanding and appreciation of the rights and privileges granted by the Indian Constitution. The paper also focuses on the political processes and the actual functioning of the political system.

    Indian Foreign Policy

    To acquaint students with the illusion of India’s foreign policy since independence. Particular emphasis is laid on the foundation aspects of foreign policy as also shedding light on the mechanics and dynamics of foreign policy making and implementation. Emerging aspects embodying India’s interface with global and regional players and multilateral organizations and forums shall also be dealt with.

  1. It prepares the students to think critically and independently and helps them to appreciate different points of view and broaden the knowledge of current affairs.
  2. Students can pursue a degree with the help of this knowledge of Political Science.
  3. It prepares students for a variety of careers including law elementary and secondary education and positions in government agencies and political affairs.
  4. Students enable to develop academic proficiency in the sub fields of Indian Government and politics, comparative government, International relations, Public administration, Political theory and Political ideology.
  5. By gaining the knowledge of Political Science, students can develop the knowledge of election through which they can analyze politics
  6. It highlights the importance of political participation and prepares the students take part in the political life of their communities and the nation.

    This is a Forum where all the Departments in the college will address their subject specific students at least once in week on a stipulated day and time to know the academic as well as personal problems so that they are resolved.
